The "Germy" Potato

Activity
Peel two potatoes of approximately the same size, then rinse and store both in cool water.

After you discuss the importance of hand washing in preventing the spread of colds, pass one potato around the class, allowing each child to hold it. Have the last child place the potato in a zipper-type plastic storage bag.

Have the children wash their hands thoroughly, then pass around the second potato; place it in the same type of bag. Ask students to predict what will happen to the potato in each bag.

Watch what happens over the next few weeks. The difference will amaze your students! Then discuss what made the difference.

Warning: DO NOT open the "germy" bag. You don't want to touch what's growing in there!

Learning Objective
Reinforces the cold-prevention lesson and dramatically demonstrates how bacteria grow. Builds skills in scientific prediction and observation

Materials
Potatoes, plastic zipper-type bags

Preparation Time
A few minutes to prepare the potatoes, then a few weeks to see what happens

Entire class
